Alameda Youth Fire Academy (AYFA) for Rising High School Juniors & Seniors

AYFA is a summer program sponsored by The City of Alameda Fire Department (AFD), in collaboration with The City of Alameda and the Alameda Unified School District. The AFD is recruiting High School students entering their Junior or Senior year for an intensive two-week program designed for youth who are considering pursuing a career path in Fire Service, Fire Science and Emergency Medical Service. Applicants must be residents of the City of Alameda. Applicants must be able to attend all 10-days of training to be eligible for the certificate of completion. There is no cost to participate. A fund is available for students who need assistance with purchasing appropriate training attire.


AYFA will be held at The City of Alameda Fire Department’s Training Center located on Alameda Point. The 10-day program will be conducted Monday through Friday from 7:30am to 3:30pm from June 22 – July 3, 2020. Each day will have PT, classroom, hands on instruction, and drills.

STEP 2: Approved applicants and their parents/guardians will be invited to attend a mandatory orientation with their parent/guardian that will be conducted by the AFD staff at the Alameda Fire Training Center on Alameda Point.

STEP 3: Applicants will be invited for in-person interview with the AFD Director of Training. 

STEP 4: Finalists will need to submit a Medical Release signed by a physician before they take a physical abilities test that will be administered at Encinal High School that will include:

  • Run a 10-minute mile
  • Complete 25 push-ups
  • Complete 5 pull-ups
  • Swim 100 yards, any stroke, no time limit

Ten Recruits will be selected. Each Recruit will be required to submit a medical release signed by a physician and obtain the appropriate vaccinations. Parents/Guardians will also be required to sign waivers to hold the AFD, the City of Alameda, and the Alameda Unified School District harmless.  

AYFA recruits will be issued T shirts and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to use while they are attending AYFA. AYFA Recruits will be responsible for their own pants, boots, belt, shorts and running shoes for Physical Training (PT). Funds are available for participants who need aid.

LOCATION: The Alameda Fire Department Training Center – 950 W. Ranger Road on Alameda Point

DATES: AYFA will be conducted for 10-days from June 22 – July 3, 2020. Training will be held Monday through Friday from 7:30am to 3:30pm. Physical Training (PT), classroom and hands on instruction, and manipulative drills will be conducted every day. Recruits are required to attend all 10 days to be eligible for a certificate of completion. Recruits who miss any training time will be dismissed from the program.


DAY 1 Orientation and expectations, history of the Fire Service and the Alameda Fire Department. PT, and PPE.

DAY 2 PT, Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) fit test and instruction, PPE and SCBA practice.

DAY 3 PT, Introduction to Firehose, Hose Operations.

DAY 4 PT, Introduction to Ground Ladders, Ladder Drills.

DAY 5 PT, Introduction to First Aid, CPR Certification.

DAY 6 PT, Vehicle Accidents and Extrication.

DAY 7 PT, Marine Operations, Fireboat, Inflatable Rescue Boat, Water Rescue.

DAY 8 PT, Introduction to Power Equipment, Hose and Ladder Drills.

DAY 9 PT, Final Drills (EMS and Fire).

DAY 10 PT, Graduation and BBQ.
