Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)
The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) course provides training to Alameda residents and employees of Alameda businesses to help increase self-sufficiency in the event of a disaster. Participants learn skills that will enable them to provide emergency assistance to their families and neighbors.
The course is taught in five class sessions and a final exercise:
- Personal Preparedness and Hazard Mitigation
This introductory class provides an overview of the entire series and information on how to prepare your home and your family. We will cover important steps to take before the next earthquake.
- Disaster Medical 1 & Disaster Medical 2
Learn basic triage – the sorting and prioritizing of the sick and injured. Learn how to give initial care, use basic first aid techniques, and how to prepare for the extended care of a disaster victim. Learn the elements of critical incident stress management.
- Fire Suppression / Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) Awareness, and Terrorism/ Active Shooter Response
This class will provide students with basic fire theory, extinguishment methods for various fuel types, and how and when to use a fire extinguisher. The class also includes hazardous materials awareness, a discussion about Terrorism, and active shooter incidents and what to do to protect yourself and others.
- Disaster Search Techniques & Completion Exercise
Students will learn to recognize structural damage, how to make a systematic search for people who are unable to self evacuate and techniques to move heavy objects that impede rescue. An introduction to basic Incident Command System (ICS) will also be taught. The completion exercise includes size-up techniques, search and rescue, extinguisher use, and triage.
The CERT classes are held at the City Hall West 950 West Mall Square room 201, Alameda, CA
CERT courses are given four times throughout the year.
