At its October 6, 2020 regular meeting, the Alameda City Council appointed Kimi Sugioka as Alameda’s next Poet Laureate. The Poet Laureate’s term is for three years, during which they will raise the profile of poetry and creative writing in general within Alameda through public events and community service activities, and provide mentorship to the City's youth.

On July 21, 2020, the Alameda City Council voted unanimously to dename the park formerly known as Jackson Park (located on Park Ave. at Encinal Ave.). A Park Renaming Committee was formed and is now asking the community for name ideas, based on the criteria described below. This group will then formulate a name recommendation to the Recreation and Parks Commission.
