The Alameda Free Library has launched a new mobile wifi hotspot lending program, expanding free internet access to patrons. With this new service, library patrons can check out hotspots just as they would check out a book or other library resources.
Hotspots are portable, easy to use, and provide a connection to the internet through the Verizon cellular network. Verizon offers 4G LTE connectivity and the signal strength will vary based on the physical location of the hotspot. To use a hotspot, patrons must have an internet ready device such as a computer, laptop, or tablet. Each mobile hotspot kit contains a hotspot device, USB-C cable w/power brick, a quick start guide, and a case.
Hotspots check out for a 21-day period with no renewals. They are currently available for check out at the Main Library but they can be placed on hold and be picked up at any of our three locations. There is no fee for this new service. Borrowers must have a valid adult Alameda Free Library card.
The three-year lending program is funded by the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. The Main Library is located at 1550 Oak Street and is served by AC Transit routes 21 and 51A. Bicycle parking racks are available at the library. The Bay Farm Island Library is located at 3221 Mecartney Road and the West End Library is located at 788 Santa Clara Avenue. All three locations are wheelchair accessible.
