Saturday, March 28, 2020 | Weekly Update from the City of Alameda

Published on March 28, 2020

CURRENT SITUATION
Last week, the United States became the country with the most cases of COVID-19 worldwide, with over 100,000 confirmed cases. The number of positive cases is increasing dramatically each day. California has the 3rd highest number of cases, behind New York and New Jersey, with 3,801 confirmed positive cases as of March 26 and 78 deaths. Half of these cases are in the age group of 18-49. Alameda County has 204 positive cases, with 4 deaths. The Alameda County Department of Public Health has not released the cities where the positive cases are located, however public health experts recommend residents take measures as if the virus is in our community now to slow the spread.

STAY AT HOME ORDER DETAILS
On March 19, 2020, the Governor ordered all residents to stay home with some exceptions, including outdoor activity while maintaining at least 6 feet of social/physical distancing, shopping for essential goods, and engaging in work for essential businesses and governmental services. The purpose of the order is to preserve public health and safety and ensure the health care delivery system is capable of serving all, prioritizing those of the highest risk and vulnerability. The goal is to bend the curve and disrupt the spread of COVID-19.

For Alameda residents who are older than 65 or with chronic health conditions and at high risk of severe illness from COVID-19, the order urges individuals to stay in their residences to the extent possible, except as necessary to seek medical care.

BUSINESS COMPLIANCE
If a business is not complying with the order, please leave a message for the City at 510-747-6800 and email the county at Covid19compliance@acgov.org.

PARKING ENFORCEMENT
The Alameda Police Department is not enforcing street sweeping zone parking violations. Street sweeping will continue, but on a reduced level. Please only consider moving your car if you are not sick, over 65, or have a chronic illness, and if you are able to do so and maintain strict social/physical distancing of at least 6 feet. Tickets will be issued for flagrant violations such as blocking fire hydrants, driveways, red zones, disabled parking spots, and double parking.

ALAMEDA PARKS
The open space areas in Alameda parks remain open. Play structures and shared surfaces must not be used to slow the spread of COVID-19. When you are in our parks, be sure to use at least 6-feet of social/physical distancing everywhere and don’t congregate in groups -- no group games are allowed. All current ARPD classes, activities, and rentals are cancelled and the ARPD offices are closed.

TAX DEADLINE EXTENSION
The federal government extended the deadline for filing taxes to July 15.

STATE POLICY
This week, Governor Newsom announced a major financial relief package -- no new foreclosures and no overdraft fees during the COVID-19 crisis, and established a statewide moratorium on renter evictions through May 31, 2020, with specific requirements. For additional information, please visit www.gov.ca.gov.
