Alameda Ready Week 5: Get your go bags ready!
Published on May 09, 2025
During Week 5 of the City's Preparedness Campaign we are working on our "go bags" -- small backpacks or bags (e.g., a duffle bag) filled with crucial supplies that you and members of your household can grab in case of an earthquake.
WEEK 5: Get Your Go Bags Ready
Each member of your household should have a go bag, even very young children. Keep your go bags in a place that will be easily accessible in case of an earthquake, such as under each individual's bed, in a front hall closet, or in a secure container in your garage or outbuilding.
Go bags for each family member should include:
-
Water and food Extra set of clothing
-
Work gloves
-
Copies of IDs and other documents (like insurance cards)
-
Hygiene items (toothpaste and brush, soap, sunscreen, sanitary products)
-
Contact lists
-
Small amount of cash
-
Medications, contact lenses/glasses, pet supplies
At least one of the bags should include:
-
Flashlight
-
Extra batteries
-
Portable radio
-
First Aid kit and manual
-
Whistle
-
Lighter/ waterproof matches
-
Portable charger for phone
-
Pet food & medications, vaccination records
-
Small pet water bowl
-
Jack knife
-
Tarp
-

TIPS! To save money, consider using old school or sports backpacks you are no longer using. It is possible to buy pre-packed emergency survival kits that contain water, snacks, flashlights, first aid, and other crucial supplies. If you buy one (or more) of these kits, remember that you will still need to pack personal items, such as clothing, shoes, and medication for each family member (including pets).
Note: Keep a pair of sturdy shoes near your bed so that you can protect your feet from sharp objects (like glass) in the event of an earthquake.
We're never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down -- we're gonna make you prepared!
