Parks are important public spaces, their names have impacts, and should represent the values of the community. For thousands of years, the Ohlone people lived on the land that is now known as the East Bay in the San Francisco Bay Area, including the city of Alameda. Chochenyo is the language the Ohlone people spoke in this area.
Earlier this year, the City Council voted to rename the former Jackson Park to Chochenyo Park based on the work of a diverse, community-led committee and with support from the Recreation and Parks Commission. More info: https://alamedaca.gov/chochenyocelebration
