City of Alameda Begins Process to Develop Homelessness Strategic Plan
Published on January 14, 2021
This month, the City begins work on a new five-year Homelessness Strategic Plan (HSP) to reduce and prevent homelessness in Alameda and strengthen the physical health, mental health, and social service supports for our unhoused residents.
From 2017 to 2019, Alameda’s unsheltered population rose by 13%, to 231 individuals. In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic left an even greater number of Alameda families and individuals at risk of, or directly experiencing, homelessness. In response, the City established a Day Center, safe overnight parking, and created a homeless hotline. The Homelessness Strategic Plan will build on these actions and provide actionable goals, strategies, and tasks to move towards making these experiences rare, brief, and non-recurring.
This plan will be developed through an inclusive, community-based planning process over the next eight months, with multiple opportunities for public input, including community meetings, focus groups, and a Citywide survey. A community kick-off meeting will be held at 6:30pm on Monday, February 1, 2021.
Addressing homelessness and supporting enhanced livability and quality of life in Alameda is a priority for the Alameda City Council. To learn more about the Homelessness Strategic Plan, or to sign up for our mailing list, please visit www.alamedaca.gov/homelessplan.
