Construction to begin on Otis Dr. Traffic Calming & Safety Improvement

The City of Alameda’s Otis Drive Traffic Calming and Safety Improvements Project will begin construction between Westline Drive and Willow Street on November 30, 2020. Construction is estimated to be completed in early 2021. The project will convert Otis Drive from a four-lane street to three lanes, with one lane in each direction and a center turn lane. The project will add bike lanes, update crosswalks, and improve safety for all modes of transportation. The project also improves the operations and safety of the AC Transit bus lines by moving the bus stops from the near side to the far side of intersections, providing Americans with Disability Act (ADA) improvements, and removing low ridership bus stops. The concept for the project was developed based on community input through surveys and two workshops, and the concept was approved by the Transportation Commission and City Council in 2019. Construction work hours are restricted from 7 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday.  The contractor will place “No Parking” signs 72-hours in advance of when the work will begin and parking restrictions will become effective. Bus stop access and access to individual driveways will be maintained throughout the project. 

The contractor will work to keep one lane of traffic open in each direction at all times, but motorists and residents may experience minor disruptions in traffic, temporary loss of on-street parking, an increase in noise levels, and dust during construction.
