The Alameda Police Department (APD) is changing how information on victimization and offending is collected and reported by participating in the FBI’s National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS). This transition will:
As the new national data collection standard, NIBRS captures specific details for victims, known offenders, relationships between victims and offenders, arrestees, property, and drugs involved in crimes. This data is collected for up to 10 offenses within an incident, representing a substantial shift in how crime is currently reported in the City of Alameda.
NIBRS data provides detailed, accurate, and meaningful information about crime compared to the traditional Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) standards and provides additional information regarding crime within the city. Moving to NIBRS will enable APD to give context to specific public safety problems. With this change, officers will be able to provide the community with in-depth information about victimization and offending. The additional detailed crime incident data are captured in a standardized format, which provide greater analytic capability and makes NIBRS a superior crime reporting standard. NIBRS will also be a prelude to APD’s upcoming data-driven approach for long term problem solving.
The Alameda Police Department is making it a priority to do our part by supporting the national transition to NIBRS and began reporting NIBRS-compliant crime data to the California Department of Justice for submission to the FBI on November 9, 2021.
