City and AUSD Launch “Summer Jobs Campaign” for Alameda Youth
The City of Alameda and the Alameda Unified School District (AUSD) are launching a “Summer Jobs Campaign” to encourage more employers to create summer jobs and internships for teens. The Fifth Annual Alameda Youth Career & Job Fair will take place on Thursday, March 21, 2019, from 2:30 to 4:30 pm, at Encinal High School’s gymnasium, 210 Central Avenue.
Open to all high school students in Alameda, the free event has expanded every year to include over forty employers, City-sponsored internships, trade organizations, educational institutions, and a wide range of summer opportunities. A Resume Help Desk is available for students who seek guidance on how to format or update their resume. Students who bring a resume to the Job Fair will be eligible for a drawing to win a pair of Oakland A’s tickets.
Alameda Mayor Marilyn Ezzy Ashcraft created the Mayor’s Summer Jobs Honor Roll to recognize employers who hire at least one teen this summer. Employers are asked to pay teens at the City of Alameda’s new minimum wage of $13.50 per hour, which goes into effect July 1, 2019.
“I am proud to create the Mayor’s Summer Jobs Honor Roll to recognize all employers on the Island who step up and hire our talented young people,” said Alameda Mayor Marilyn Ezzy Ashcraft. “This annual event connects our future workforce with employers and valuable career training opportunities.”
The City and AUSD have also partnered on a marketing effort called “Island City Interns” to promote the creation of more entry-level internships, particularly for the 800+ students enrolled the AUSD’s Career Technical Education (CTE) pathways, which include Computer Science, Sports Medicine, Marketing, Early Childhood Education, Digital Filmmaking, Radio Broadcast Journalism, and Multimedia.
“This is an excellent opportunity for local employers to meet our talented students who are eager to apply the skills they learn in the classroom to practical work experience,” said AUSD Superintendent Sean McPhetridge. “I want to thank every employer who will provide our students with valuable, real world experiences this summer.”
The Youth Career & Job Fair is supported by AUSD, Alameda Collaborative for Children, Youth, and Their Families (ACCYF), the City of Alameda’s Community Development Division, and Alameda County Supervisor Wilma Chan.
Employers and organizations offering summer jobs/educational opportunities can register for a free table at the March 21st event and/or sign up to be on the Mayor’s Summer Jobs Honor Roll via this link https://tinyurl.com/YouthCareerFair2019 or by contacting Eric Fonstein at the City of Alameda at efonstein@alamedaca.gov or Felicia Vargas at Alameda Unified School District at fvargas@alamedaunified.org. Employers are asked to register by Thursday, March 14.
