Project Updates
Construction for Stages 2 and 3 will begin on Monday, May 18. The construction of these stages will result in road closures on Fernside Boulevard approaching Tilden Way, with detours in place for the road closure. Traffic signals will be removed at the intersection of Tilden Way/Blanding Avenue/Fernside Boulevard and will be converted to an all-way stop. Tilden Way and Blanding Avenue will remain open.
On Wednesday, June 3, Tilden Way traffic will be shifted to a temporary roadway to the north of the intersection to allow room for construction of the new roundabout. Between May 18 and June 3, the City of Alameda Public Works will evaluate the intersection to determine if an all-way stop is to remain in place. Construction for Stage 2 and 3 will be on-going until October 2026.
*Dates are subject to change due to weather and unforeseen conditions.
Thru traffic road users in Alameda are encouraged to use alternate routes to get around the Fernside Boulevard Road closure, such as Encinal Avenue and Broadway.
About the Clement Avenue/Tilden Way Improvement Project
The Clement Avenue/Tilden Way Improvement project will improve safety for all street users and reduce vehicle delays on and off the island. It includes a roadway reconfiguration with the construction of a roundabout at Tilden Way/Blanding Avenue/Fernside Boulevard, safety improvements at the intersection of Tilden Way/Broadway, and an extension of Clement Avenue from Broadway to Tilden Way. The project also proposes to improve pedestrian and bicycle facilities, improve bus stops, resurface the pavement, and create an open space dog park and other landscaping. For information about how to use a roundabout, please visit the Roundabouts in Alameda webpage.
Construction work is planned to take place in 5 stages and involve various road closures with detours both for vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Work includes, but is not limited to, demolition of existing roadways, installation of new utilities and roadways, and new pavement delineation and landscaping. The Bridgeside Shopping Center will remain open throughout the duration of construction, although expect detours to gain access to the center.

Current Construction Stage: Stage 1
Stage 1 construction involves temporarily closing the right shoulder of Broadway between Tilden Way and Clement Avenue, temporarily closing the right turn lane from Blanding Avenue to Tilden Way (right turns will still be allowed from the straight lane), and permanently closing the right lane of Tilden Way from Miller-Sweeney Bridge to Broadway. Street parking and driveway access within the work area may be affected. “No Parking” signs will be posted 72 hours in advance of any work.
This stage will focus on constructing the extension of Clement Avenue from Broadway to Tilden Way. This stage will also focus on constructing half of the pedestrian/bicycle path from the Bridgeside Shopping Center along Tilden Way. Temporary walkways will be placed giving pedestrians and bicyclists a travel path from the extended Clement Avenue to the shopping center.
Nearby residents and businesses will receive more information directly as construction progresses. Stage 1 is expected to continue through May 2026, subject to weather and other unforeseen circumstances.

Upcoming Construction Stage: Stage 2 and 3
Construction stages 2 and 3 will occur simultaneously involving temporarily closing Fernside Boulevard between Versailles Avenue and Tilden Way and temporarily closing the approach to Fernside Boulevard from Pearl Street. In addition to these closures, there will be a permanent east-bound lane reduction on Tilden Way between Broadway and Miller Sweeney Bridge in preparation for the construction of the roundabout. Street parking and driveway access within the work area will be affected. “No Parking” signs will be posted 72 hours in advance of any work.
This stage will focus on constructing the roundabout at the intersection of Tilden Way/Blanding Avenue/Fernside Boulevard which will include the reduction of the lanes from 2 to 1 on Tilden Way from Broadway to Miller Sweeney Bridge. This stage will also focus on improving the connection to/from Pearl Street from Fernside Boulevard, constructing widened sidewalks on the south side of Tilden Way, constructing a new pedestrian island and medians, and upgrading driveways within the work area. Temporary walkways will be placed giving pedestrians and bicyclists a travel path across Blanding Avenue as they travel along Tilden Way.
Nearby residents and businesses will receive more information directly as construction progresses. Stages 2 and 3 are expected to continue through October 2026, subject to weather and other unforeseen circumstances.
