In 1973, Electra Littlejohn organized Alameda's first Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration on the steps of City Hall. In 1978, Mayor Chuck Corica invited the celebration inside, where it has been held and organized by Reverend Betty Williams for the last 43 years. This 44th year, Reverend Williams will share opening remarks by Zoom, and next year we look forward to returning inside for the 45th annual celebration.

Our 2021 Celebration includes remarks from:

  • Vincent Tolliver sings Life Every Voice
  • Robin Lynn Wilson, Black Achievers Alliance Founder
  • Reverend Betty Williams
  • Cammie Harris, Wood Middle School Principal
  • Kai Dwyer, Alameda high School Dean of Student Services
  • Tony Wright, Jonathans Sandwich/Krispy Krunchy Chicken, Black Achievers Alliance Member
  • Yolanda Cater, Educator, Black Achievers Alliance Member
  • Hear from Alameda students
  • Vincent Tolliver sings Happy Birthday to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
