Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive Kicks Off at City Hall
Tuesday, May 7  |  11:30 a.m.

Join Mayor Marilyn Ezzy Ashcraft to help kick off the 27th Annual Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive on Tuesday, May 7, at 11:30 am in front of Alameda City Hall.

Here’s how it works. On Tuesday, May 7, mail carriers will leave an empty bag at Alameda addresses for residents to fill with non-perishable food donations. Then on Saturday, May 11, mail carriers will pick up the filled bags during their regular rounds. Non-perishable food donations collected will all go to the Alameda Food Bank for distribution to its clients in Alameda.

“This annual drive is critical to our ability to help feed the Island,” said Alameda Food Bank Executive Director Cindy Houts. “Last year, the drive netted 12,745 pounds of food that went on the tables of the 2,100 households in Alameda that turn to us for help.”

“Letter carriers look forward to this event every year,” said Joe Johnson, who is coordinating the event for the mail carriers. “It’s a great opportunity for us to make life a little better for people in the community we serve.”

Stamp Out Hunger is conducted annually on the second Saturday in May by the National Association of Letter Carriers. Last year, more than 70 million tons of non-perishable food was collected nationwide and distributed to local food banks.

“It is very gratifying to be Mayor to such a generous and compassionate community. The Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is a wonderful opportunity where in just one day, we can all join together to make a difference,” stated Alameda Mayor Marilyn Ezzy Ashcraft.
