The most recent Fiscal Year 2020 (FY20) federal funding bill for Military Construction and Veterans Affairs (VA) includes $26 million to continue building a state-of-the-art VA Outpatient Clinic and National Cemetery at Alameda Point. This funding would come in addition to $87 million that was already appropriated for the project’s design, engineering, and environmental work. When complete, the facility will serve over 100,000 veterans.
Mayor Marilyn Ezzy Ashcraft was in Washington DC earlier this month and met with staff of the House Appropriations Committee, Representative Barbara Lee, and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Mayor Ezzy Ashcraft stated, “While in Washington advocating for this funding, I was assured that Congresswoman Lee has been tireless in her efforts to do the same. Her hard work paid off and the House Appropriations Committee included $26 million in additional funding for the Alameda medical facility and columbarium. The City of Alameda is deeply grateful for Congresswoman Lee’s ongoing leadership on this vital project.”
Congresswoman Barbara Lee stated, “This facility is critical to ensure veterans in my congressional district receive the care they need and deserve. The FY20 bill also includes critical increases in funding to address suicide prevention, provide homelessness assistance, PTSD, and increased access to care for women veterans to ensure that our increasingly diverse veteran community has access to the healthcare they need.”
