Alameda Police Detective's investigation into identifying the individual seen threatening peaceful protesters on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day yields a suspect.

A 33 year old male, and Alameda resident, has been identified as the man seen holding what appeared to be a long gun and threatening the peaceful protestors on January 18th.

Since the day of the incident, this case has been a top priority for our investigating detectives. Investigators have spent hours interviewing witnesses, attempting to contact victims, and combing through video evidence. During the course of the investigation, the suspect admitted to being the person seen confronting protesters in the Bay Port neighborhood.

In the course of his confession, the suspect identified the weapon as a replica "Airsoft" gun but told investigators he got rid of it. Measures are still being taken to confirm these statements. During a search of the suspect's home, several pieces of evidence were located connecting the individual to the incident, including the distinct clothing he was seen wearing when approaching peaceful protesters. No firearm or replica weapon was found during this search.

The case was transmitted to the Alameda City Prosecutor’s Office for filing consideration. On February 12, 2021, City prosecutors filed a two count criminal complaint against the Defendant for violating California Penal Code Section 415(3) (commonly known as disturbing the peace in a manner likely to provoke a violent reaction) and Penal Code Section 20150(a) (commonly known as unlawful alteration of an imitation firearm).

While we have identified a suspect, we are still asking for any victims who were threatened to come forward and call 510-337-8340.

The Alameda Police Department is committed to our community's safety and holding those responsible for criminal activity accountable for their actions. We want to thank the surrounding residents for their initial calls and the community for their patience during our investigation.
