Planning Board to consider proposed changes at October 26 public hearing

ALAMEDA, Calif. — The City of Alameda is taking steps to help fill vacant storefronts, support local businesses, and strengthen the economic vitality of Park Street and Webster Street, two of the City's primary commercial corridors.

On Monday, October 26, 2026, at 7 p.m., the Alameda Planning Board will hold a public hearing to consider proposed zoning changes designed to make it easier for businesses to open or expand along these corridors.

The proposed changes would simplify the City's approval process for a variety of businesses, including retail stores, personal services, offices, and other commercial uses.

The effort is part of the City's broader strategy to reduce commercial vacancies and encourage business activity by identifying and removing unnecessary regulatory barriers.

Specifically, the proposed amendments would update the Community Commercial (C-C) Zoning District, the North Park Street Gateway (NP-G) Zoning District, and related sections of the Alameda Municipal Code.

The proposal was developed following three subcommittee meetings and a Planning Board workshop, incorporating feedback gathered throughout the process.

At the October 26 public hearing, the Planning Board will consider the proposed amendments and make a recommendation to the City Council. The City Council will then consider the proposed changes before any final adoption.

Community members are encouraged to learn more and share their feedback. For meeting details, information about the proposed zoning changes, or instructions on submitting public comment, visit the City of Alameda's Planning Board meeting webpage.
