City of Alameda Announces a 46.8% Reduction in Homelessness Following the 2026 Point-in-Time Count
Every two years, communities across the country conduct counts of individuals experiencing both sheltered (living in temporary housing) and unsheltered (living on the street, in cars, or tents) homelessness. This “Point-in-Time Count” (PIT Count) is federally mandated by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). This year, the community-wide count was conducted on January 22, 2026.
According to recently released data from Alameda County, the County saw an 18% decrease in unsheltered homelessness and a 13% overall reduction in homelessness countywide.
For the City of Alameda, the results were especially significant, as the number of individuals experiencing homelessness decreased by 46.8% compared to 2024 PIT Count results.
“We are gratified to have reduced homelessness in our city by almost 47% over the past two years,” said Alameda Mayor Marilyn Ezzy Ashcraft, adding that, “This outcome shows what is possible when a city invests in compassionate, proactive programs and services to support residents in need.” Mayor Ezzy Ashcraft acknowledged the hard working, dedicated City staff and City partners, including the Warming Shelter, Dignity Village, Alameda’s Day and Night Center, the Safe Parking Program, Street Engagement Team, CARE Team, emergency supportive housing, and Alameda Family Services, noting that, “Their unwavering commitment is vital to reducing our unsheltered population by connecting individuals with essential services and resources.”
The City’s progress was made possible by a strong network of programs, partnerships, and direct outreach efforts to connect individuals experiencing homelessness with employment opportunities, healthcare resources, and pathways to permanent housing.
The 2026 PIT Count results reflect the City of Alameda’s meaningful progress, over the past two years, to address homelessness effectively and compassionately. The City remains committed to continuing these efforts going forward.
