Alameda's General Plan is Being Updated: We Want to Hear from You!
Published on April 19, 2021
The March 2021 draft Alameda General Plan 2040 is now available for public review and comment at www.alameda2040.org. California state law requires that every city adopt and maintain an up-to-date, internally consistent, general plan. The City of Alameda’s current General Plan has not been comprehensively updated since 1991, and many new and important challenges are facing our community, including climate change, the affordable housing crises, equity and inclusiveness, mobility and transportation, safe streets, open space and park funding priorities, and natural disasters and pandemics. Alameda General Plan 2040 is a statement of community goals, objectives, policies, and actions that address the challenges facing us both today and in the future. The March 2021 draft General Plan was shaped by comments from over 1,500 residents, multiple City Boards and Commissions, a wide variety of interest groups, and four Planning Board public forums.
“The next 20 years will be a period of change in the Bay Area and in Alameda. The draft General Plan 2040 is designed to manage that change in a manner that provides for the needs of all Alamedans and ensures a high quality of life for future generations of Alameda residents and businesses,” remarked Andrew Thomas, director of Alameda’s Planning, Building, and Transportation Department.
The City encourages all Alameda residents and business owners to review and comment on the draft General Plan 2040 website at www.alameda2040.org by May 17, 2021. The updated plan is designed to guide City and community decisions regarding equity and inclusion, the environment and climate change, transportation and mobility, public health and safety, and community character and design. The comments we receive will inform the Planning Board’s final recommendations on the draft Plan this summer and the City Council’s final deliberations on the draft Plan later this year.
