Alameda’s Housing Element is being updated; we want to hear from you

Today the City published its 2022 draft Housing Element that will be available for public review and feedback for the next thirty days at www.alameda2040.org/housing.

To make sure housing policies and programs are inclusive and represent the values and ideas of our City’s diverse population, we want to hear from as many Alameda community members as possible. Comment on the draft document at www.alameda2040.org/contact or mail comments to Andrew Thomas, Planning, Building, and Transportation Director, City of Alameda, 2263 Santa Clara Avenue, Room 190, Alameda, CA 94501. The Housing Element is required by State law and it must provide for Alameda’s fair share of the regional housing need, referred to as the Regional Housing Needs Allocation (RHNA). The Housing Element provides policies and programs to shape and guide decision making about the types of housing needed, the locations for new housing in Alameda, and strategies and programs to preserve housing and help people with special housing needs.

The City of Alameda is requesting public comments on the 2022 draft Housing Element by May 9, 2022. “The community plays a critical role in the creation of these plans. More than 1,700 community members and 25 community organizations helped us write the 2040 Alameda General Plan, which the City Council adopted in January. We need everyone’s help to make this a great Housing Element,” remarked Andrew Thomas, Director of the Planning, Building, and Transportation Department at the City of Alameda.
