Published on October 14, 2020
As of this afternoon, 438 positive cases of COVID-19 have been reported in the City of Alameda since the first case was reported on March 10, 2020.
Alameda County has had 22,325 cases and 442 deaths and the State of California has had 855,072 cases and 16,639 deaths. The United States reports 7,891,674 positive cases and 216,406 deaths. And across the world there have been 38,337,435 positive cases, an increase of nearly 5 million cases over two weeks, and 1,088,903 people have died from COVID-19.

Alameda County is now in the Orange Tier of the State’s color-coded 4-tier blueprint for reopening. However, until further notice, there are no Orange Tier activities permitted in Alameda County.

Being in the Orange Tier means that the transmission rate for COVID-19 is moderate. Where we rank is based on our case rates, test positivity rate, and a health equity metric, which means that the test positivity rate in the most disadvantaged neighborhoods doesn't significantly lag behind the County's total positivity rate.
Statewide, there are 6.8 new cases per day per 100,000 people and a test positivity rate of 3.4%. Here in Alameda County, we have 2.9 new cases per day per 100,000 people and a 1.5% test positivity rate.

Alameda County is preparing to update its local Health Officer Orders to permit additional activities during the week of October 26, including:
- Indoor dining up to 25% capacity or less than 100 people
- Indoor worship services up to 25% capacity or less than 100 people
- Indoor theaters up to 25% capacity or less than 100 people
- Expansion of indoor retail and malls at up to 50% of capacity and permitting limited indoor food courts
The County announced that playgrounds are now allowed to open, following State guidance. The City of Alameda’s playgrounds will reopen this Saturday morning, October 17, but we want to emphasize to everyone to use playgrounds with caution. The County said that playgrounds pose a risk of spreading COVID-19 because they have high-touch surfaces and involve gathering and mixing of households. Because of the increased risks, we ask that individuals be especially aware of the surfaces they touch. In addition, maintaining at least 6 feet of physical distancing and wearing masks are critical to keeping yourself and others safe.
Adults are responsible to supervise children and make sure masks and distancing are used at all times and to bring your sanitizer. We encourage families to come at different times and days to avoid crowding. Please note that City playgrounds are not being monitored for visitor compliance with State COVID-19 recommendations.
While playgrounds will be open, outdoor public basketball is still not allowed per the County's Health Orders, and our outdoor basketball courts remain closed.

Halloween is a time of joy in our community, but this year we have to celebrate different. The City strongly discourages trick-or-treating and parties based on County and State guidance. These high risk activities will spread COVID-19. Read more about some of the lower risk activities happening in Alameda here!
