The Prosecution and Public Rights Unit (PPRU) of the Alameda City Attorney’s Office is the only unit of its kind in Northern California dedicated to representing the People of the State of California in misdemeanor criminal matters and enforcing fair housing and consumer protection laws.
In 2025, the Alameda City Attorney’s Office received the American Bar Association’s Hodson Award, a prestigious national honor presented annually to one government or public-sector law office for outstanding performance and extraordinary service.

The PPRU also reached a major milestone with the unanimous approval of its first-in-City Victim Services Program. Through this initiative, PPRU victim advocates now provide crisis intervention, case management, and support services to victims and witnesses of crime throughout the criminal justice process. To support this work, the PPRU also secured $500,000 in federal grant funding through the Byrne State Crisis Intervention Program.

Now in its sixth year of operation, the 2025 PPRU Annual Report(PDF, 4MB) highlights its continued impact, including fielding more than 1,100 housing and consumer protection inquiries and opening dozens of investigations to protect Alameda residents and ensure compliance with the law. The prosecution team reviewed more than 1,200 cases for charging - a 50% increase over 2024’s record-setting 800 cases - and successfully resolved 455 cases with an 85% favorable outcome rate.
