The City of Alameda is seeking community input on proposed designs for a new mural located on Blanding Avenue. This artwork is part of a City public art grant, originally awarded in 2018. When the original location planned for the mural became infeasible, the Public Art Commission worked to identify a new location for the mural. Because the mural is intended to be site-specific, the artist submitted two new mural design proposals that the City is seeking community feedback on. The designs and community feedback will go before the Public Art Commission for review and recommendation, and then to the City Council for final approval.

Provide Feedback: Please visit alamedaca.gov/mural to submit your feedback prior to February 28, 2021. Alternatively, you can email feedback to Amanda Gehrke at agehrke@alamedaca.gov.

About the Artist: Dan Fontes has a long history in the Bay Area and is well known for many local murals, including the Giraphics and Zebra murals underneath Highway 580 in Oakland.

Location: 1925 Everett Street (mural proposed for wall facing Blanding Avenue)

Proposed Designs: There are two proposed mural designs.

  • Park Street1909, 14’x16’: Park Street 1909 provides a glimpse into the history of nearby Park Street, and the streetcar line which used to serve it.
  • Egret, 14’x7’: The Egret design reflects the site’s proximity to the Oakland estuary, and the native wildlife which frequents the channel.  While the artwork is located in an industrial area, it reveals the natural ecosystem located just one block away.
