Alameda hosts reception honoring women who serve as first responders

During Women’s History Month, the City of Alameda is hosting a reception honoring women who serve as first responders. In increasing numbers, women serve Alameda as police officers, firefighters, paramedics, EMTs, dispatchers, and support staff.

This event is open to the public and honors the leadership and dedication of Alameda’s first responders. We’ll hear from two distinguished speakers, Alameda County Sheriff Yesenia Sanchez, and Lieutenant Misty Carausu, featured in the Netflix docuseries American Nightmare for her incredible service.

“I support the 30x30 initiative (addressing the underrepresentation of women in policing by increasing the representation of women to 30% by 2030) and even more!” stated Police Chief Nishant Joshi. “Women in public safety are key to the Department’s initiative on increasing diversity and inclusion. We’re creating an environment that values and respects the contributions of women in law enforcement and over the past 24 months, more women have been hired and promoted and have taken on critical assignments ranging from recruiting, training, operations, and investigations. I continue to be impressed by the work done by women in public safety and can only imagine what the future holds.”

“Female first responders are integral members of our diverse firefighting workforce, serving our community as firefighters, paramedics, and EMTs. We often see patients who are more willing to engage with female firefighters during medical emergencies. The Alameda Fire Department is committed to prioritizing attracting and recruiting qualified female firefighters through various career fairs and recruiting events throughout the region, including the NorCal First Alarm Girls Camp,” stated Fire Chief Nick Luby.
