March 8 COVID-19 Update

Published on March 08, 2020

The City of Alameda is sharing the below information from the California Office of Emergency Services (CalOES) regarding the Grand Princess Cruise Ship that is scheduled to temporarily dock at the Port of Oakland on Monday, March 9. Mayor Marilyn Ezzy Ashcraft also issued the following message:

"Last night we learned that the Port of Oakland was selected as the best site for the Grand Princess cruise ship to dock in order to allow passengers who are California residents to disembark. All of these passengers (almost 1,000) will now be quarantined at two military bases outside the Bay Area for the next 14 days. As we continue to work to protect ourselves and our community from the spread of COVID-19, Alameda stands ready to assist the state and the federal governments and the City of Oakland, if requested. I urge Alamedans to follow recommended preventative actions to reduce the spread of COVID-19, especially to our most vulnerable populations. Please wash your hands regularly (for at least 20 seconds), avoid touching your face, stay home if you’re sick and have food and medical supplies on hand at home in case you need to self-quarantine. We will continue to provide information as it becomes available."

Update on Grand Princess Cruise Ship from the Governor's Office of Emergency Services

  • This effort is being led by the state and federal governments, with Alameda County and the City of Oakland providing support as needed.
  • The passengers will not be released into the general public. California residents aboard the ship will be taken to federal facilities for isolation and quarantine, while non-California residents will be transported to federal facilities in other states.
  • The crew will be quarantined aboard the ship, which will leave the Port of Oakland as soon as passengers have disembarked.
  • Anyone with immediate health care needs upon disembarkation may be transported to local and regional health care facilities to receive care.
