The Alameda Police Department (APD) has arrested an individual for filing a false police report and insurance fraud, following an investigation into a reported carjacking.

On March 25, 2025, at 8:30pm, APD officers responded to the report of a carjacking at Doolittle Drive and Island Drive. The reporting party alleged they were forced off the road by the driver of another vehicle, threatened with a weapon, and their vehicle was stolen by two suspects who fled the scene.

APD officers conducted an extensive search of the area and were unable to locate a vehicle, suspects, or any evidence to corroborate the reported incident. APD officers continued their investigation and discovered video evidence that revealed the carjacking report was fabricated. The reporting party was arrested and taken into custody for filing a false police report and committing insurance fraud.

“Incidents like this, while thankfully rare in Alameda, understandably cause concern within our community,” stated Police Chief Nishant Joshi. “Our officers acted swiftly and thoroughly to expose the fabrication and ensure the individual responsible is held accountable.”

In 2024, there was one carjacking incident in the City of Alameda, with officers recovering the vehicle within two hours. This false report is the first such incident in 2025. At the same time, the City of Alameda continues to experience a downward trend in crime. In 2024, the City saw an overall reduction in crime by 13%, accompanied by a 23% increase in arrests. These trends continue into 2025.
