Do I Need a Permit for a Temporary Sign?
No. The City does not require a permit for temporary signs such as grand opening banners, promotional signs, and seasonal sale signs.
How Long Can I Have a Temporary Sign?
The allowed duration of the temporary sign depends on the type of sign. Most common temporary signs such as grand opening banners and promotional signs are allowed for a maximum of thirty (30) consecutive days.
Where Can I Find Specific Regulations for All Types of Temporary Signs?
Temporary signage regulations can be found in the Alameda Municipal Code (AMC) Chapter 30-6 Sign Regulations. The AMC can be viewed at: www.municode.com/library/ca/alameda.
Signs Allowed
The following types of temporary signs are permitted (subject to AMC regulations & limitations):
Grand Opening Banners
- Erected one time only for a maximum of 30 consecutive days.
- Not exceeding 50 square feet in size.
- Sign shall state the date installed in letters at least 1” in height.
Portable Freestanding (“A” Frame) Signs
- Sign must be placed within the first 3 feet of sidewalk starting at the building face.
- Maximum 4 feet tall and 3 feet wide allowed.
Seasonal Sale Signs
- Signs are allowed a maximum of 30 consecutive days.
- Not exceeding 25 square feet in size.
- Signs must be removed within 2 days after the sales event.
Promotional Signs
- One window sign for a maximum of 30 consecutive days, and not more than 90 cumulative days per year.
- Sign shall state the date installed in font at least 1” in height.
Special Event Signs
- Signs with a holiday message identifying a civic or public event or holiday for not more than 30 consecutive days.
- Signs must be removed within 2 days following the event.
Prohibited Signs
- Signs Hazardous to Traffic.
- Obscene or Offensive Signs.
- Signs Hazardous to Exits.
- Signs Located on Roofs
- Inflatable devices of any type are prohibited.
- Windblown devices such as streamer flags and feather banners are prohibited.
- Motion Devices: Signs using flashing lights, change of color intensity, or mechanical moving parts are prohibited. .
