Celebrate Juneteenth at Alameda South Shore Center's Family Friendly Festival
On June 19, we celebrate Juneteenth, a federal, state, and local holiday that commemorates June 19, 1865, the day that Union soldiers, dispatched by President Abraham Lincoln, arrived in Galveston, Texas to announce to more than 250,000 African Americans, still enslaved under Confederate control, that on April 9, 1865 — more than two years earlier — the Civil War ended, and the Emancipation Proclamation was issued, formally abolishing the abhorrent practice of slavery
The celebration of Juneteenth serves as a poignant reminder of long overdue freedom and justice, and the work we, as a nation, must still fulfill to reflect the values and ideals this country was founded upon.
You can celebrate Juneteenth this Friday, June 19, 2026 from 12:30 to 5 PM at Alameda South Shore Center’s family friendly “Juneteenth Festival” that will include live music, food and drinks, art and vendors, and a Kids’ Zone.
