Five Water Safety Reminders

1. Actively Supervise

Give children your full attention whenever they are in or around water. Avoid distractions while supervising swimmers.

2. Learn to Swim

Swimming lessons and water competency skills are important layers of drowning prevention for children and adults.

3. Wear a Life Jacket

Use a properly fitted, U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket whenever appropriate, especially around open water and while boating.

4. Swim With a Buddy

Never swim alone. Even experienced swimmers should swim with another person and follow posted facility and lifeguard rules.

5. Learn CPR

Parents, caregivers, coaches, and other adults who spend time around water are encouraged to learn CPR and basic emergency response skills.

Remember: Swimming lessons, life jackets, and flotation devices are important safety tools, but no single safety measure can prevent every emergency. Use multiple layers of protection and provide active adult supervision whenever children are around water.

Make a Splash Safely!

Swimming is a lifelong skill that supports safety, health, fitness, recreation, and fun. ARPD encourages everyone in our island community to build water confidence, learn swimming skills, understand water safety, and enjoy Alameda's aquatic opportunities.
